In preparing for the worst, we become focused on the impractical. Humanity would not exist in its abundance if the worst thing possible occurred so frequently. Yet this perception of fear informs so many other preventative measures taken, and even empowers corporations and the government with an almost invulnerable existence as entities on which we depend for our most vital needs.

Government should legalize abortion to protect women from having a child from rape. Corporations should better cater to consumers’ impetuous desires and their compulsions instead of consumers stabilizing their wants and acknowledging the needs that persist regularly with very little change. People vote for Obama primarilybecause they fear the worstwill happen if Romney gets elected. All of these and more.

The suggested overarching theme is the motivation based on a fear of the future, which comes from persistent rumination and a hyper-consciousness that focuses on the moment alone. To look at history would mean to see what could be done in the future; history would suggest that human beings don’t have to fear the worst.

After all, bare survival is what civilization aspired to overcome. Tradition led human beings into homes for warmth, civic life, and preservation. We should admit we actually have much less to fear, is what I’m saying. Preparing for the worst is the largest step backwards that humanity can take. Living fulfilling and satisfying, purposeful lives is only possible if we have a sense of duty to do what is right and what is necessary to live that way. THat means we need to focus on living in such a way that it doesn’t take constant education for a reality, which actually isn’t, in perpetually renewing. That means we need to adopt methods for surviving and stick with them so we can focus on other things, like love, friendship, and our communities and culture. We need to live in such a way that we can live without a government or corporations providing everything for us.

Our communities must be built upon our own work and families. Self sustaining. Self governing. Self correcting. To do so means we end up prepared for the worst: once the worst happens, as with disaster or any unexpected event, life must restore itself, not through ‘changing’ because things have ‘changed’, but through the same methods that prevailed before disaster.

We would find ourselves fit for struggle if we believed with sincerity that nothing that may happen...

This would do us good in producing a sense of self-government and hope, whereas the dependence on science and reason keeps us from acknowledging our own innate strengths and building on them.
